In the moving business you have three types of estimates for long-distance and interstate moves. These are called nonbinding, binding, and binding not-to-exceed. I am going to walk you through the pros and cons. Now, let’s start with the most common type nonbinding estimates.
Nonbinding estimates can increase or decrease depending on the weight of the shipment.
Pros, with nonbinding estimates you pay for the exact weight of your shipment so the final price could decrease if your shipment weighs less than the original estimate.
Cons, on the flipside though, if your shipment actually weighs more than it was estimated to be, you’ll have to pay more.
Next, let’s talk about binding estimates. With the binding estimate, you will pay exactly what the mover’s original estimate is regardless of how much your stuff weighs.
Pros, since you will pay the original estimate regardless of what the shipment weighs you’ll know how much your move will cost from day 1. Also, even if your shipment weighs more, you won’t have to pay more money.
Cons, if your shipment weighs less than the estimate you’ll still have to pay the original estimated amount. You’ll have to ask yourself if it is worth the gamble.
The third and most recommended type is the binding not-to-exceed estimate. A binding not-to-exceed estimate means that you will never pay more than the original price but if your shipment’s weight is less than it was estimated to be, you will pay the lower price.
Pros, you know the maximum amount you will have to pay on moving day as soon as you have the estimate. You also have the flexibility to save money if your shipment weighs less.
Cons, this is the best deal and it is so great for customers that some movers don’t want you to know about it but now the secret is out.
